The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has deregistered 74 political parties.

This suggests that only 18 political parties survived the deregistration process.

The commission carried out a review of the performance of political parties after the 2019 general elections to see which parties qualify to exist.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja today, Thursday, February 6, 2010, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, also disclosed that the Commission has fixed September 19, 2020 for the governorship election in Edo and October 10, 2020 for the gubernatorial Ondo state.

INEC as well as stakeholders in elections decried nearly one hundred political parties in the last election with 80% of the parties fielding no candidates in any position.

While it costs INEC a lot of money the process was cumbersome as many voters complained of not seeing the political parties of their choice.
