The death of the Assistant Director in Aso Rock Laetitia Naankang Dagan again like almost high profile killings in Nigeria is being treated with trivialities, carelessness and deliberate attempts to muddle investigations and conceal the facts, Daily Mail reports.

Killed at 11pm on Monday while at home after work, Dagan’s death is falling down the usual Nigerian trappings of high level cover up, a source at the deceased family said on Friday.
Describing her as full of life, simple, a woman who could not hurt a fly, she said, “trace her death to those in power.”
But the police allegedly initially gave a narrative that has astounded the public especially the deceased family.
According to the alleged initial police account that has been described as ludicrously lousy, a cell phone was picked at the scene of the murder belonging to one of the assailants.
The alleged unofficial report ascribed to the police, said the assailants hurriedly left behind their phone while doing away with the deceased phone.
This has prompted the quick arrest of one Edirin Ohonre, who the police say “is suspected to have conspired with others now at large to perpetrate the crime.”
According to the official police account, however, which is different from earlier insight into Miss Dagan’s murder, the FCT Police spokesperson, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, said in a statement that, “Preliminary investigation into the suspected murder by the Criminal Investigation Department of the FCT Police Command led to the arrest of one Edirin Ohonre who is suspected to have conspired with others now at large to perpetrate the crime.

“The suspect, who is currently under interrogation, is assisting the team of police detectives with information that will lead to the arrest of the other suspects connected to the crime, that are now at large.

“While commiserating with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased on the unfortunate incident, the FCT Police Command is assuring members of the public that it has deployed relevant investigative tools to unravel the circumstances surrounding the victim’s unfortunate death and ensure the arrest and prosecution of suspects behind the heinous act.

“The command is urging members of the public to disregard insinuations making the rounds in some social media platforms, and also wish to appeal to the members of the public to desist from pre-empting the ongoing police investigation.”

The official statement removed the cell phone account and attempts to reestablish that fact by Daily Mail failed.

But the late Dagan was in charge of administration at the Aso Rock Villa. According to a source and as always, she touched all kinds of documents and had access to almost all documents including secret ones.

Her death just when the public has been flooded with schism in Aso Rock over power tussle and who controls what between the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari and the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno leaves much to be desired, a closed family source said.

But a family source voiced out what should give a quick and clear insight into her murder, that the door was not spoilt neither was anything stolen. There is a belief that, it must have taken few days of planning and expert execution to undertake that murder without causing stirs within the neighbourhood.

Soon after her life was snuffed out of her, Nigerians quickly said, her death could not have been unconnected with the Aso Rock leaked document showing a divided presidency.

And for a security matter as huge as that to be leaked, a source say, it must take someone high up the administrative ladder to be used even as the police warned the public against “pre-empting the ongoing police investigation.”

Much more are frowns that, just like Bola Oge, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, to mention a few, went down similar lane of absolute conspiracy and outright cover up, This too might end up exactly like that.

As Daily Mail reports, the police are wont to quickly warn against speculation and quickly arrest suspects who when taken to Court either dramatize or are proven to be wrong suspects. The public are driven to hysteria soon afterwards when another murder occurs or a serious issue happens occupying their attention.

Like Badeh, like Ige, it is feared that not a week yet, Miss Dagan’s death may have followed similar pattern. There’s no shock about her death. Aso Rock functions as usual and no special inquest as would be expected.

As the family mourns one of their bright stars and bread winners, Nigerians have receded to their usual posturing of “nothing would come out of the investigation.” The belief is that, it would soon be forgotten and every one feels it is normal especially as there is no national shock.
