President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, on Friday in Abuja met Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.

The visit was a ‘thank you’ visit. He told the president he “clearly won” the disputed election.

Spreading to journalists, Sissoco Embalo said, “Nigeria has an important role to play in the African continent.  That’s why I will always come to Nigeria. Nigeria has shown solidarity in the most difficult periods of our country.

“We are aware that Nigeria is a reference for democracy in the whole world. You have always shown that democratic choice is the best way to resolve things.

“It is the people who make the choice. This is why I am here today to reaffirm the solidarity of the people of Nigeria towards us.”

Daily Mail reports that there was a protest by Guineans in Abuja ahead of the visit in what was described as a rigged election.

African electoral process is fraught with irregularities. Nigeria’s 2020 elections were described in uncomplementary terms with both local and international observers say fell car short of minimum standard attained in 2015.

The 2015 election led to the defeat of a sitting president.
