A top Iranian cleric said the country’s citizens could use a potential coronavirus vaccine made by Israel if they could find “no substitute,” The Time of Israel has reported.

“It is not permissible to buy and sell from Zionists and Israel,” Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi said Wednesday. “Unless the treatment is unique and there is no substitute.”

Shirazi is one of the top religious authorities in the country and used to be a member of the country’s council that appoints the leader. He has a history of making anti-Semitic comments, including Holocaust denial.

Iran has been the center of one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks. The country has over 10,000 confirmed cases, with over 6,500 new cases in the past week.

Meanwhile former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has claimed the coronavirus is a biological weapon created in a laboratory. “It is clear to the world that the mutated coronavirus was produced in lab, manufactured by the warfare stock houses of biological war belonging to world powers,& that it constitutes a threat on humanity more destructive than the other weapons that target humanity,” he said.
